Smart Grant Amounts
The federally funded National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National Smart Grant) is a new grant that begins in the 2006-2007 academic year.

The maximum Federal SMART Grant available to eligible students is $4,000 per year. The amount received by each student depends on the student’s financial need, the cost of the school the student attends and the other financial aid awarded to the student. The Federal SMART Grant funds awarded to a student cannot exceed one full year of academic tuition and students may not receive grants for more than one school at a time.

The National SMART grant can provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study for full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.

Note that the amount of the SMART Grant, when combined with a Pell Grant, may not exceed the cost of attendance at the college or university of the student’s choice.

If the total amount of the national federal grant funding approved by the government during any academic year is less than the amount required to provide all grants to all eligible students, then the amount of the grant will be reduced equally for each student. If additional funding is appropriated for any year the reduced grants will increase equally for all eligible students. Grants will not be awarded for an academic year for which the student received college credit before the date of government enactment of the SMART Grant program.

If the student is eligible for grant disbursement, the Office of the Bursar for the college or university will apply the Federal SMART Grant award to student fees (tuition, fees, room and board, and other institutional charges as approved and permitted by the student). If there are any Federal SMART Grant funds remaining, after the grant is applied to the student fees, the balance of the funds will be mailed to the student by check or, if the student chooses, the funds can be deposited directly into a checking or savings account designated by the student.
