The National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) is a need-based grant that is available to those who have also qualified for the Federal Pell Grant.
The National SMART Grant is available only to third and fourth year undergraduates majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. You can find a list of the eligible majors here: http://www.ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/attachments/GEN0606A.pdf
To be eligible for a National SMART Grant you must also be a U.S. citizen, enrolled in an undergraduate program on a full-time basis, and have completed at least 60 credits toward your undergraduate degree, for third year eligibility, and 90 credits for fourth year eligibility. You must also have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
If you are a Federal Pell Grant recipient, your student records will be evaluated for this federally-funded gift program that awards $4,000 for each of the third and fourth academic year of study toward your first undergraduate degree.
The U. S. Department of Education (USDE) will use the information collected in the completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application to identify eligible students and notify the student’s college or university. Students who have already received their financial aid for the fall and who are eligible for the SMART Grant will have their financial aid packages adjusted to reflect this new federal grant.
You should not that federal law stipulates that the SMART Grant when combined with the student’s expected family contribution (the EFC as defined by the information you provide in your FAFSA application), other forms of financial aid, and other resources cannot exceed the cost of attendance at the school in which the student is enrolled. In some cases, therefore the SMART Grant will be designated to replace other financial funding, especially student and parent loans. Students are always notified of the new award and adjustments to other financial aid.
